Deadly Flood Claims Lives, Leaves Trail of Destruction
Yola, Adamawa State — A devastating flood swept through parts of Yola today, leaving a trail of destruction, widespread displacement, and multiple fatalities in its wake. Torrential rains, which began in the early hours, triggered the deluge that submerged homes, washed away vehicles, and forced hundreds of residents to flee for safety.
Local authorities have confirmed several casualties, though the exact death toll remains uncertain as search and rescue operations continue. Emergency services and volunteers are combing through debris in a desperate effort to locate missing persons feared to be trapped or swept away.
“This is one of the worst flood incidents we’ve witnessed in recent years,” said a spokesperson for the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA). “We are coordinating with federal agencies to provide immediate relief and intensify rescue efforts.”
Eyewitnesses describe the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking, with families stranded on rooftops and entire neighborhoods engulfed. Many residents have lost everything.
The flood has also raised renewed concerns over drainage infrastructure, early warning systems, and the state’s preparedness for climate-related disasters.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and relocate to higher ground as more rain is expected in the coming days.
This tragic incident adds to the growing list of climate-induced disasters affecting communities across Nigeria.
