The traditional ruler of Umeh Kingdom in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty Ambrose Odiri Owhe I, has died at the age of 103, bringing to an end a remarkable 50-year reign.

Ascending the throne in 1975, King Owhe I was officially recognised as the first gazetted monarch of Umeh Kingdom by the then Bendel State Government in 1984.

His reign was marked by profound humility, integrity, and an enduring commitment to the welfare of his people.

The announcement of his passing was made on Thursday by the Umeh Kingdom Traditional Council of Chiefs (Ogbedion).

The statement, delivered by the Council Secretary, Philip Utoro, was jointly signed by High Chief James Omobor, the Adheise of Umeh Kingdom, and Prince Meshack Owhe, the Azano of Umeh Kingdom.

“It is with hearts filled with grief but deep gratitude to God for an illustrious and magnificent reign that we announce the transition of our distinguished monarch, His Royal Majesty, Ambrose Odiri Owhe I, J.P.,” the statement read.

In line with tradition, the announcement was preceded by the firing of fourteen cannon shots, followed by a minute of silence and seven additional shots. The monarch’s royal stool was then ceremonially covered by three Edions (quarter heads), symbolising the commencement of the official mourning period.

Residents have been instructed to make necessary preparations by Sunday, June 1, ahead of a seven-day mourning period beginning Monday, June 2, and ending Sunday, June 8, 2025.

During this period, all markets, farming activities, and ceremonies are to be suspended.

Public institutions will fly flags at half-mast, social media platforms affiliated with Umeh Kingdom are to display the late king’s photograph, with individuals encouraged to do likewise.

All titled chiefs, notables, and residents are to also wear a black armband on their left arm.

King Owhe I is remembered as a cultural icon under whose leadership Umeh Kingdom evolved from a modest riverside village into one of the most rapidly developing communities in Delta State.

His reign brought peace, unity, and growth, earning him deep respect across the region.
