Doctors to Begin Nationwide Strike Thursday as Ultimatum Expires

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has announced plans to commence a nationwide strike on Thursday, July 25, should the Federal Government fail to meet its demands before the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum on July 23.

NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, confirmed this in an exclusive interview on Sunday, stating that the association is fully prepared to take decisive action if the government does not respond appropriately.

“Our demands are essential for the survival of Nigeria’s healthcare system and the well-being of medical professionals,” Prof. Audu said.

The ultimatum, issued on July 2, followed a controversial circular from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) that outlined revised allowances for medical and dental officers in federal service.

The NMA rejected the circular, accusing the commission of breaching previous agreements and unilaterally implementing policies without proper consultation.

“We have clearly rejected that circular,” Audu stressed. “We expect any new policies affecting our members to result from mutual consultation, not unilateral imposition.”

He disclosed that while the association has engaged in several meetings with key government officials, including the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, and other top stakeholders, the issue remains unresolved.

“Our last meeting was two weeks ago, and though constructive, it was agreed that further deliberation was needed. Unfortunately, the follow-up meeting scheduled for last week was postponed due to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” Audu explained.

The NMA president emphasised that urgent dialogue was still possible and necessary. “We hope the postponed meeting, involving the NSIWC, Ministries of Finance and Health, will hold early this week. Otherwise, the strike will proceed as planned.”

Meanwhile, the Katsina State chapter of the NMA has expressed strong opposition to the NSIWC circular.

In a communique issued after its State Executive Council meeting on Saturday, the branch condemned the directive and called for its immediate withdrawal.

“The Katsina NMA unequivocally rejects the NSIWC circular (SWC/S/04/S.218/III/646) dated June 27, 2025, and demands prompt government action to meet all pending demands,” the statement read.

It was signed by the branch Chairman, Dr. Muhammadu Sani, and Secretary, Dr. Yahya Salisu.

The association warned that if the government fails to act swiftly, it cannot guarantee continued delivery of health services across the country.
