Edo Police Officers Face Trial for Vandalising Car During Protest Rescue Operation
The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that several officers captured on video vandalising a car during a rescue operation in Benin City are currently facing disciplinary trial.
According to Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Moses Yamu, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the incident occurred on May 20 during an emergency response involving officers from the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
Yamu explained that the IRT personnel had been deployed to rescue fellow officers traveling from Lagos through Edo State who were reportedly attacked by protesting youths at Okhuimwun community in the Benin Kingdom, located in Ovia Northeast Local Government Area.
“A reinforcement team that was deployed in the scene rescued the IRT personnel and effected the arrests of some of the miscreants involved in the attack, but some police officers were captured in a video conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner and smashed a vehicle parked in the location.”
While condemning the mob attack on the IRT officers, the command also expressed concern over the inappropriate actions of the police officers during the rescue.
