Emirship Chaos Continues in Kano

The Sallah Durbar in Kano State is poised to be a flashpoint of tension, potentially escalating the ongoing emirship dispute. The simultaneous Durbar processions planned by rival emirs, Aminu Ado Bayero and Lamido Sanusi, heighten the possibility of clashes between their respective supporters.

Governor Yusuf’s directive for preparations and security assurances are insufficient to completely neutralize the risk of violence given the entrenched nature of the dispute.

The court challenge by Ado Bayero only further fuels the conflict, as does his declaration of intent to hold his own Durbar, marking his fifth year in office, despite his removal. The presence of thousands of attendees, alongside the significant cultural symbolism of the event, creates a dangerous environment if not carefully managed.
