Four Workers Tragically Die in Tunnel Accident at Bauchi Water Plant

The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed a heartbreaking industrial accident that resulted in the deaths of four workers at the Gubi Water Treatment Plant.

Spokesman of the Bauchi State Police command, Ahmed Wakili announced the incident during a press briefing on Sunday in Bauchi.

The accident occurred during a sludge-cleaning operation within the plant’s tunnels.

The victims have been identified as Shayibu Hamza (48), Abdulmalik Yahya (29), Jamilu Inusa (29), and Ibrahim Musa (42), all of whom were residents of Firo village in Ganjuwa Local Government Area.

Wakili reported that the workers had entered a clarifier to dislodge pit pipes when the tragedy occurred.

“They were found unconscious in the tunnel and were immediately transported to the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi, where they were later pronounced dead,” he stated.

In response to the incident, police personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene, and an investigation into its causes has been initiated.

The management of the water treatment facility is reportedly cooperating fully with the authorities to facilitate a comprehensive review.

Wakili emphasized the critical importance of implementing rigorous safety measures in high-risk environments, stating, “Safety must be non-negotiable in operations like this.”

He urged both management and workers throughout the sector to strictly adhere to established safety protocols.

Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has expressed condolences on behalf of the police command to the families of the victims, their colleagues, and the management of the plant.

He reiterated the commitment of the police to enhancing safety standards to avert similar incidents in the future.
