The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed all its Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to pause any promotion and logistical work related to the planned voter revalidation exercise.
In a letter dated April 4, 2026, and signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the electoral body said RECs should stop publicising and organising activities for the nationwide revalidation initiative and await further instructions from the commission.
Earlier, INEC had scheduled the exercise to begin on April 13, 2026, as part of efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections. The plan included stages at the local government, registration area, and polling unit levels.
The letter also announced a change in the format of a meeting with RECs that had been set for April 9, 2026. Instead of meeting in person, the commission said the session will now be held virtually via Zoom, and RECs were told to remain in their states and wait for login details.
INEC apologised for any inconvenience caused by the sudden adjustments but emphasised that the suspension of publicity and arrangements for the revalidation exercise should be observed until new directives are issued.
