Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the Labour Party (LP) and announced her defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aligning herself with a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The senator made her decision public during a press briefing in Abuja, stating that her move to the ADC was both strategic and timely. According to Kingibe, the Labour Party is currently embroiled in internal crises, including factional disputes, which have hampered its effectiveness and unity.
“This is not just about picking a new party card. When I join the ADC, I will do so with noise and fanfare,” Kingibe said, expressing confidence in the ADC’s evolving structure and coalition-building efforts.
The senator also dismissed concerns over the possibility of losing her Senate seat due to constitutional provisions against defection, citing the LP’s internal divisions as justification under existing legal frameworks.
“There are two Labour Parties right now. Even INEC received two sets of candidates and results during the last elections. This is a constitutional crisis within the party, and it gives me grounds to leave,” she added.
Kingibe’s defection follows her recent appearance at the official unveiling of the ADC Coalition in Abuja, signaling her active involvement in efforts to build a united opposition front ahead of 2027.
Political observers see her move as a significant boost for the ADC, which is positioning itself as a rallying point for disenchanted politicians from across the country.
