Former APC Chairman Abdullahi Adamu Dumps Party, Joins Opposition ADC Officially

Kindly share this story

Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially defected from the ruling party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Adamu was welcomed into the ADC on Thursday in Keffi, Nasarawa State. Speaking at the event, he said his decision to leave the APC was guided by his principles and personal convictions.

The veteran politician, who became APC National Chairman in March 2022, stepped down from the position in July 2023, shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was sworn into office.

While addressing supporters at the defection gathering, Adamu criticized the APC leadership, accusing the party of abandoning its original values. He alleged that experienced members are being pushed aside, internal disagreements suppressed, and democratic processes within the party weakened.

Adamu has a long political history. He served as Governor of Nasarawa State from 1999 to 2007 and later became Senator for Nasarawa West in 2007 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 2014, he was among ten PDP senators who defected to the APC.

Since resigning as APC chairman under circumstances many considered unclear, Adamu had largely stayed out of the political spotlight.

Before the APC presidential primaries in 2022, Adamu openly supported former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the party’s preferred candidate. However, Bola Tinubu emerged victorious, defeating Lawan and 12 other aspirants to secure the ticket and eventually win the presidency.

Political observers have linked Adamu’s resignation to his perceived opposition to Tinubu’s presidential ambition during the 2023 election period.
