Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies, Survived by Wife, Eight Children

Nigeria is mourning the loss of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a prominent leader and devoted family man, who passed away in London.

According to his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and former aide, Bashir Ahmad, Buhari died at a private clinic where he had been receiving medical treatment after traveling in April for a routine check-up.

The former president was reportedly 80 or 81 years old, though some sources claim he was 82.

He is survived by his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and eight children.

Buhari, a soldier-turned-politician, served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, and earlier as the country’s military head of state between 1983 and 1985.

He was married twice, having lost his first wife early in life before marrying Aisha, who served as First Lady during his civilian presidency.
