Nigerian Custom promotes 4.291 officers, one DCGs, seven CGs

The promotion of no at least 4,291 senior officers, alongside the confirmation of one Deputy Comptroller-General and seven Assistant Comptroller-Generals have been approved by the Nigerian Custom service board .

The National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, made this disclosure in a press statement made available to journalists on Friday.

FUSION CHRONICLES NIGERIA NEWSPAPER gathered that the board reached this decision during its 61st regular meeting last week, which was chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun.

The PRO further explained that the promotions address vacancies resulting from the retirement of some management team members from various geopolitical zones across the Federation adding that the decision reflects the service’s commitment to inclusivity, institutional balance, and adherence to the Federal Character Policy as specified in Section 14(4) of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023.

He emphasised that the promotion exercise recognises exceptional performance by both general duty and support staff during the 2024 promotion exercise.

The PRO while giving a lucid breakdown of the promoted 4 291 officers, disclosed that no fewer than 80 Deputy Comptrollers advanced to the rank of Customs Comptroller, 151 Assistant Comptrollers were promoted to Deputy Comptrollers, and 612 Chief Superintendents of Customs were promoted to Assistant Comptrollers.

“Others are 641 Superintendents of Customs promoted to Chief Superintendent of Customs, 392 Deputy Superintendents of Customs promoted to Superintendent of Customs, 590 Assistant Superintendents of Customs I promoted to Deputy Superintendent of Customs, 965 Assistant Superintendents of Customs II (ASC II) to ASC I, and 860 Inspectors of Customs (IC) to ASC II,” he explained.

Additionally, the board approved a posthumous promotion to honour the late Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Etop Essien, who passed away on 25 June 2024, during a presentation before the National Assembly House Committee on Public Accounts.

“This gesture acknowledges his invaluable contributions and unwavering dedication, showcasing the organisation’s appreciation of exceptional service and commitment,” Maiwada said.

The board also announced a strategic restructuring initiative aimed at improving service delivery and administrative processes. It approved the transfer of the Post Clearance Audit Unit from the Tariff and Trade Department directly to the Office of the Comptroller-General.
Maiwada stated that the unit would now be headed by an Assistant Comptroller General, ensuring stronger oversight, increased efficiency, and alignment with global best practices.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, congratulated the newly promoted, appointed, and retained officers on behalf of the NCSB. Adeniyi charges the newly promoted to remain committed to the service’s core mandates and to pursue excellence, reaffirming the NCS’s dedication to fostering a motivated workforce with assured career progression.
