Bus plunges into Taraba river, casualties feared

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday when a commercial bus carrying an unknown number of passengers plunged into the Namnai River in Gassol Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The incident was reported by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on X. According to him, the Adamawa Express bus was attempting to cross the collapsed Namnai Bridge when it lost balance and tumbled into the river.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Makama stated that the accident happened in the early hours of the day as the vehicle, which was heading to Taraba, slipped off the broken portion of the bridge.

He lamented that the Namnai Bridge, which collapsed more than a year ago, remains unrepaired despite repeated government assurances. Residents described it as a constant danger to lives and property.

“We have lost many lives and property here because of government neglect. This tragedy shows how urgent the repair of this bridge is,” a resident said.

Makama added that the exact number of passengers and casualties was still unknown at the time of filing the report. Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Yahaya Suleiman, were unsuccessful as calls to his line did not connect, and text messages sent to him remained unanswered.
