How Ghana Learnt From Nigeria In Having Credible General Elections – INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu

In a recent statement, the Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, commended the electoral processes in Ghana, noting that the West African nation adopted key strategies from Nigeria to ensure credible general elections. Speaking at an electoral conference in Abuja, Prof. Yakubu highlighted the ongoing collaboration and exchange of best practices between the two countries. He emphasized that despite challenges, Nigeria’s consistent efforts in improving transparency, voter participation, and the integrity of the electoral process have served as a valuable model for neighboring nations.

Prof. Yakubu explained that Ghana, known for its relatively peaceful and transparent electoral history, incorporated some of Nigeria’s innovations, such as the use of biometric technology and measures to reduce electoral malpractices. He underscored that learning from each other strengthens democracy across the region. He further expressed optimism that this cross-border cooperation would foster more credible elections and political stability in West Africa.

The INEC Chairman also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to refining its electoral processes, ensuring that every vote counts and that the electoral body remains impartial. He urged African countries to continue sharing knowledge and experiences to improve electoral outcomes. His comments come amidst growing calls for more robust electoral systems across the continent, ensuring that democracy remains resilient and responsive to the needs of the people.

This acknowledgment of mutual learning between Nigeria and Ghana underscores a broader vision of strengthening democratic institutions in West Africa, reinforcing the belief that credible elections are fundamental to sustainable development and good governance in the region.
