INEC Seeks N126bn Budget for 2025, Calls for Lawmakers’ Approval

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed a budget of ₦126 billion for 2025, nearly three times the amount approved last year.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, presented the proposal while defending the 2024 budget implementation before the National Assembly on Friday.

Yakubu raised concerns over the high cost of elections in Nigeria, describing it as burdensome. He noted that INEC operated on a reduced ₦40 billion budget last year, far below the ₦80 billion initially requested.

“We need a major conversation, the commission cannot continue conducting elections all year round,” Yakubu stated, urging lawmakers to organize a retreat to address these challenges collaboratively.

He also highlighted the dire condition of INEC’s facilities, with 860 buildings nationwide requiring urgent repairs, further straining the commission’s resources.

INEC appealed to the National Assembly for swift approval to ensure effective preparation for upcoming elections.
