Institute Visits Budget Minister

The Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI) paid a meaningful and fruitful visit to Sen. Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, on Friday, February 21,2025.

The purpose of the visit is to enhance collaboration on climate financing and Nigeria’s national development goals.

Mr. Lai Yahaya, a distinguished representative of the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI), during the visit, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the opportunity to assist Nigeria in achieving its developmental goals.

Mr. Yahaya thanked the directors of the Ministry and provided a review of Africa Policy Research Institute’s efforts, Key accomplishments included getting financing for thematic working groups on climate concerns as part of Nigeria’s National Development Plan (NDP) and conducting a South-South peer learning workshop.

This workshop will bring together representatives from Indonesia, South Africa, and Senegal to discuss views on climate finance mobilization, as well as lessons learnt from their respective experiences.

“This collaboration is crucial as Nigeria seeks to enhance its climate finance initiatives,” Mr. Yahaya stated. He also highlighted the changes in global funding landscapes, noting a shift towards partnership with countries of the Global South, especially in light of pending discussions at COP 30 scheduled to take place in Brazil later this year.

In response, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning welcomed the Africa Policy Research institute (APRI) delegation and stressed the significance of stakeholder involvement in Nigeria’s ambitious Agenda 2050 Framework .

“We envision a per capita income of at least $33,000 by 2050. This target illustrates the boldness of our agenda,” he asserted.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of collaboration among diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, the Private sector, and civil society to foster policies supportive of Nigeria’s developmental goals particularly regarding environmental sustainability.

Senator Bagudu reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to creating a unified ecosystem for tackling economic and climatic issues while acknowledging the difficulties presented by fragmentation in government. He emphasized the need for a coordinated strategy to address the urgent problems of climate change while promoting sustainable growth in agriculture, fisheries, and other sectors. “Climate issues are multifaceted and require collaboration across all sectors,” he said.

The Minister also expressed optimism regarding the partnership with Africa Policy Research Institute, highlighting the importance of utilizing their expertise to boost project preparation and promote transformational projects that could achieve investment-grade prospects. “Our collaboration is vital as we navigate the complexities of climate finance and economic planning,” he concluded.
