The Kano State Hisbah Board has apprehended five young people over an alleged illegal marriage conducted without the consent of the couples parents.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Deputy Commander General of the board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, those arrested include the bride, groom, and three others who participated in the ceremony as witnesses and representatives.
Aminuddeen explained that the marriage, which was contracted with a dowry of ₦10,000, failed to meet the minimum standard required under Islamic law. He noted that the act contravened both Islamic and legal marriage procedures, prompting the board to begin a formal investigation into the incident.
He urged parents to be more vigilant about their children’s social interactions and to provide proper guidance regarding marriage decisions.
This incident comes shortly after the Kano State Government instructed the Hisbah Board to start arrangements for a mass wedding involving about 2,000 couples across the state.
Earlier, Aminuddeen had stated that all intending couples under the mass wedding scheme must register and undergo mandatory medical examinations to confirm their health status.
