Kwara communities oppose hotels, alcohol joints in Okoerin

Landlords and residents of four communities in Okoerin Ward, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State, have rejected plans to establish hotels and alcohol joints in their neighbourhood.
The affected communities are Ifesowapo, Alalubarika, Osere, and Okoerin.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, Alhaji Abdulwahab Opeloyeru, chairman of Ifesowapo community, said on Monday that the decision followed a security meeting convened after the commencement of a hotel project in the area.
Opeloyeru warned that siting hotels and alcohol outlets in the densely populated neighbourhood posed security risks and could negatively influence young people.
“Establishing a hotel here will fuel social vices and threaten the peace and harmony of our communities,” he said. “For this reason, landlords and residents are united in their opposition to the ongoing hotel project. We have also met with the owner to register our displeasure.”

He added that the communities had reported the matter to the Kwara State Police Command and the State Town Planning Authority to ensure peace and order were maintained.
