Man Arrested for Turning Home into Illegal Abattoir in Lagos

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment have apprehended a man for illegally converting his residential building in the Iju area into an abattoir.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the suspect transformed his home on Alfred Williams Street, Iju Station, into a slaughterhouse after the recent closure of the Oko Oba Abattoir in Agege.
The makeshift facility, allegedly operated under unhygienic conditions, posed serious health risks to the surrounding community, prompting concerned residents to raise an alarm.
Wahab, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, confirmed that the premises had been sealed and the suspect taken into custody.
He stated, “Following reports from a concerned citizen, our enforcement team acted immediately at No. 12 Alfred Williams Street in Iju Station.
The property owner had unlawfully converted his residence into an abattoir after the shutdown of the Oko Oba facility, endangering the neighbourhood through unsafe practices and exploiting the situation for personal gain.”
“The suspect is now in custody, and the property has been sealed. This decisive action reflects our zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, whether in public or private spaces,” Wahab added.
He also praised the vigilance of residents and encouraged them to keep reporting such unlawful acts through official channels.
