Labour Party Gives Peter Obi 48 Hours to Resign Over Coalition Move

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, demanding that he formally resign his membership following his involvement in a new political coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Obi was unveiled on Wednesday as a key figure in the newly launched opposition alliance aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released Thursday in Abuja, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, condemned the coalition, branding it a gathering of “power mongers.” He accused Obi of attempting to run with dual political loyalties.

“We are aware of several secret meetings Peter Obi has held with some of our members, trying to convince them to join his new political platform. Many have declined to defect,” Ifoh said.

He emphasized that the Labour Party is not affiliated with the ADC-led coalition and warned that the party would not tolerate members who operate with “dual agendas” or “deceptive intentions.”

“The Labour Party has made it clear it is not part of the coalition. Therefore, any member participating in it has 48 hours to resign from the party,” he declared.

Ifoh also dismissed Obi’s popular “New Nigeria” slogan, calling it a misleading narrative fueled by “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.”

He argued that true change could only come through the Labour Party, pointing out that nearly 70 percent of Nigeria’s population consists of young people eager for a break from the old political order.

“The Abure-led leadership remains focused on building a genuinely progressive and youth-centered political movement,” he added.

Obi’s coalition partners include prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, and former Senate President David Mark—who was named interim chairman of the alliance, with Aregbesola as secretary.

The coalition is being hailed by analysts as a formidable “third force” ahead of the 2027 polls.
