Lagos businessman jailed for attempted drug export

A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced businessman Uyiosa Omoregie to one year imprisonment for attempting to export prohibited drugs.

Justice Deinde Dipeolu delivered the judgment on Thursday after Omoregie pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful exportation of 3.60 kilograms of tramadol and 400 grams of Rohypnol, filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Prosecution counsel, Abu Ibrahim, told the court that the convict was arrested on July 16, 2025, at the Tarmac Baggage Hall Basement of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, while attempting to smuggle the substances to Pakistan.

He said the arrest was effected by a joint team of aviation security officers and NDLEA operatives. The offences, he noted, contravened Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

While urging the court to convict Omoregie in line with Section 274(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, the prosecutor stressed that the evidence against him was overwhelming.

However, defence counsel, Dennis Warri, pleaded for leniency, asking the court to consider a non-custodial sentence or a fine.

In his ruling, Justice Dipeolu sentenced Omoregie to one year imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, with an option of a ₦7 million fine in place of jail time. He further ordered that the seized drugs be forfeited to the Federal Government.
