Lawyer Expresses Frustration Over Challenges in Securing VeryDarkMan’s Bail

Deji Adeyanju, legal representative for social media influencer and activist Martins Otse, commonly known as VeryDarkMan has voiced his concerns over the obstacles facing his client’s release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Tuesday morning, EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, announced that VeryDarkMan had been granted administrative bail.

However, he remains in detention until he meets the stipulated bail conditions.

Oyewale noted that Otse had been summoned for questioning due to multiple petitions alleging serious financial crimes, emphasizing that Otse’s arrest was a consequence of his failure to respond to several invitations sent to him via known addresses and communication channels.

“The EFCC has the legal authority to detain Otse like any other suspect under investigation, and the necessary remand order was obtained in this case,” Oyewale stated.

“He has been granted administrative bail, which will take effect once he fulfills all required conditions.”

In response to the EFCC’s announcement, Adeyanju took to social media to express his frustrations regarding the difficulty his team encountered in accessing the documentation outlining the bail conditions for VeryDarkMan.

He highlighted that multiple requests for these documents have gone unanswered.

“Bail has been granted to VDM; however, we have yet to receive any formal documentation from the commission,” Adeyanju stated. “Since we were notified of the bail granted yesterday, we have made several repeated demands for this information.”

In addressing the circumstances that led to VDM’s arrest, Oyewale clarified on social media that the arrest was justified and not a retaliatory measure against what he termed “unguarded attacks” from Otse regarding the EFCC.

He explained, “The EFCC invoked its mandate to address economic and financial crimes by inviting Martins Vincent Otse in relation to numerous petitions involving serious allegations of financial misconduct.

He did not comply with several invitations sent to him through established communication channels.”

Oyewale acknowledged the suspect’s prior criticisms of the commission but reiterated that these were not factors in his arrest.

He reminded the public to avoid speculation and to allow the EFCC to execute its constitutional duties without interference.

“The Commission appreciates the public’s interest in its operations,” he concluded.

The enthusiasm and vigorous reactions surrounding its activities are appreciated; however, speculation regarding its motives in executing its duties must come to an end.

The EFCC should be allowed to perform its responsibilities without fear or favoritism. Once investigations are complete, charges will be filed.
