NAFDAC Seizes Illegal Alcoholic Drinks in Wuse Market, Abuja

Abuja, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has made a significant breakthrough in its fight against the circulation of unregulated alcoholic beverages. In a decisive operation carried out at the bustling Wuse Market in Abuja, the agency seized large quantities of illegal alcoholic drinks believed to pose serious health risks to consumers.
The operation, conducted by a team of enforcement officers, targeted vendors and distributors involved in the sale of unregistered and counterfeit alcoholic products. According to NAFDAC, these products lacked proper regulatory approvals, with some containing harmful substances that could endanger public health.
Speaking on the development, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the agency’s commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians. “This operation is part of our continuous effort to rid the markets of substandard and falsified products. Consumers must remain vigilant and ensure they purchase only NAFDAC-approved beverages,” she stated.
Wuse Market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in Abuja, has long been a focal point for trade in food and beverages. However, the availability of counterfeit alcoholic drinks has raised concerns among authorities and consumers alike. The seized items, reportedly worth millions of naira, include popular but fake brands packaged in unsafe conditions.
NAFDAC has urged the public to report suspicious products and vendors to aid its enforcement efforts. The agency also reiterated the importance of consuming only properly labeled and certified products to avoid health complications.
This latest crackdown highlights NAFDAC’s proactive measures in enforcing food and drug safety regulations and protecting the Nigerian populace from the dangers of counterfeit goods. The seized items will be destroyed following standard procedures, while investigations into the sources and distribution networks of the illegal drinks are ongoing.
Consumers are reminded to always verify NAFDAC registration numbers on products and patronize reputable outlets to ensure safety and quality.
