Bello Turji Demands ₦50 Million 'Farming Tax' from Zamfara Communities or Threatens Bloodshed

Fear has gripped communities in Zamfara State as reports emerge that notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, has demanded a whopping ₦50 million from residents of Tsalaken Gulbi, stretching from Fakai village in Shinkafi Local Government Area all the way to Qaya, near the Niger Republic border—just for the “privilege” to farm during this year’s rainy season.

According to local sources, Turji’s men allegedly delivered the ultimatum directly to farmers, warning them that unless the money is paid in full, no one will be allowed to step onto their farmlands — and anyone who dares to defy the warning risks violence, destruction, or death.

The demand has sparked panic and outrage, as this region is already suffering from widespread food insecurity, displacement, and rising insecurity due to constant attacks by armed gangs.

“How can you ask poor villagers who live from hand to mouth to raise ₦50 million just to grow food? This is criminal terrorism, and the government must act now,” said a concerned resident who asked to remain anonymous.

Bello Turji is already on Nigeria’s most-wanted list and has been linked to mass killings, kidnappings, and cattle rustling across the North-West. Despite previous military operations targeting his camps, he appears to remain active and unrestrained in rural Zamfara.

Community leaders are now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently intervene before the planting season is completely disrupted, which could devastate food production and worsen hunger in the region.

As of now, there is no official response from the Zamfara State Government or Nigeria’s security forces.
