One Dead, Four Injured in Anambra Multi-Vehicle Crash

In a tragic turn of events that adds another thread to the intricate tapestry of Nigeria’s road safety challenges, one person has been confirmed dead while four others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Ihiala–Owerri Road, near the Basco Hotel, Anambra State, on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:15 a.m., involved six vehicles and eight male occupants — a kaleidoscopic mosaic of motion that suddenly descended into chaos.
The vehicles included a Mack trailer, a Lexus 350 SUV (YAB-131-DA), an Inveco truck (ABC-693-XD), a Mitsubishi L300 truck (JJJ-488-SQ), a Toyota Camry (MKA-331-AA), and an Inveco tipper (HAL-604-ZX).
According to an eyewitness who stood amid the labyrinth of mangled metal and shattered glass, the crash was orchestrated by a moment of brake failure.
“The trailer driver, traveling at high speed, lost control after his brakes failed and rammed into five other vehicles,” the witness recounted. “One person died instantly, while four others were injured and rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala.”
The driver of the Lexus SUV, sadly, was pronounced dead on arrival — his journey cut short in the crucible of the road’s unpredictability. His remains have been deposited at the hospital morgue.
Confirming the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Public Education Officer, Margaret Onabe, said the FRSC rescue team from RS5.34 Ihiala responded promptly, evacuating the victims and clearing the scene to restore traffic flow.
She added that the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, extended her condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured victims a swift recovery.

Onabe further urged motorists to transcend reckless habits by embracing defensive driving, patience, and maximum concentration behind the wheel.
“The FRSC Anambra Command appeals to all motorists to be cautious, drive within speed limits, and report any road emergencies through our toll-free line 122,” she said — a reminder that safety, like life itself, is an intricate dance we must all orchestrate with care.
