PDP 2027 Ticket Sparks Debate Over South-East Votes
The former Enugu State governor, Rt Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (popularly known as Gburugburu), has been tipped to emerge as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, with former Benue governor Samuel Ortom as his running mate.
The move is reportedly aimed at weakening Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the South-East region, a stronghold of his support base.

While many see the strategy as politically motivated, one observer shared mixed feelings:
“Though I wasn’t a fan of Ugwuanyi’s leadership as governor, I support any credible effort to produce a president from the South-East — even if the candidate isn’t perfect. Other regions have had their share of flawed leadership.”
However, the credibility of this ticket is being questioned by some, especially considering Ugwuanyi’s poor electoral performance in 2023.
“If this is Wike’s plan to split Obi’s votes, it’s laughable. Ugwuanyi lost five elections in his polling unit in 2023 due to Obi’s influence. Nothing has changed — Obi will still defeat him in his unit and across the South-East in 2027″.
