Residents Seek Government Help as Flood Wrecks Shops in Anambra

A severe flood triggered by heavy rainfall on Tuesday wreaked havoc around Zik Avenue, Iweka Road, near the popular Ochanja Market in Onitsha, Anambra State, destroying goods, displacing traders, and bringing business activities to a halt.

According to FCNN, the area—home to several commercial enterprises—suffered significant losses as floodwaters, caused by blocked drainage systems, inundated shops and streets.

Residents and traders were caught off guard as the water spread rapidly, forcing many to stay indoors for safety.

Viral videos captured the chaos, showing people scrambling to salvage their goods. A tricycle operator was seen battling to pull his vehicle from the water, while others sought refuge in safer corners.

When reporters visited the area on Wednesday, residents were seen scooping water out of their homes and shops.

Many shared their distress, calling on the Anambra State Government for urgent intervention.

“This area is close to the River Niger. A slight mistake and someone could be swept into the river,” said a resident, Uchenna. “We’ve never seen flooding like this. With NiMET predicting more floods in the coming months, we fear the worst is yet to come.”

Another resident, Justine Ugoh, added, “The roads were indistinguishable from the drainage. People couldn’t go out for hours. Though no lives were lost this time, the danger is constant. We’ve done our part with sanitation, yet we still live in fear whenever it rains.”

Residents are urging the state government to act swiftly, improve drainage infrastructure, and ensure better flood management to prevent future disasters.
