Soldiers rescue kidnapped victims in Kwara

Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued two kidnapped victims during an operation in Kwara State, led by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division and Commander, Sector 3, Operation FANSAN YAMA, Maj. Gen. Chinedu Nnebeife.

The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division, Lt. Col. Polycarp Okoye, announced this in a statement on Saturday.

According to him, Maj. Gen. Nnebeife, during an operational visit to Patrol Base Babanla on Thursday, led troops on an advance into Babasango Forest, where the victims were successfully rescued. The rescued persons were later handed over to the traditional ruler of Ayekale, Oba Pius Oluwole Onidofin of Idofin Odoeshe Ayekale.

Okoye explained that the operation followed a recent bandit attack near Idofin in Omu-Aran Local Government Area, where three traders were killed at Olegbede village.

“Oba Oluwole attributed the frequent attacks to the community’s proximity to Babasango Forest and appealed for continuous military presence in the area,” the statement added.

Maj. Gen. Nnebeife, while consoling the royal father, assured that the Army would sustain its operations to flush out bandits and other criminal elements from the forest.

Recall that in late September, armed bandits attacked Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, killing at least 15 vigilantes and hunters — an incident that forced many residents to flee, leaving the area almost deserted.
