Suspected Herders Kill Plateau Farmer Over Grazing Dispute

A 56-year-old farmer was killed on Thursday in Miango, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, following an attack by suspected Fulani herders.

The victim’s son, Stephen, confirmed the incident to reporters on Friday, revealing that his father had gone to inspect his millet farm when he encountered the herders grazing their cattle on the land, damaging the crops.

According to Stephen, trouble began when his father asked the herders to move their cattle away from the farm. “It was around 5 pm when my father went to the farm. On getting there, he saw Fulani herders grazing their cows on his millet plantation.

He approached them to ask that they leave, but they attacked him with knives, cutting him severely and leaving him in a pool of blood. That’s how he died.”

Stephen also decried the slow response of security operatives. “People reported the killing to security agents yesterday, but they only arrived at our house this morning (Friday),” he said.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off at the time of reporting.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of farmers in the region.
