Tinubu Govt Vows To Flag Off 1000km Sokoto-Badagry Road Abandoned Since Obasanjo’s 1976 Regime

The administration led by President Bola Tinubu has announced that work on the 1000km Sokoto-Badagry highway will commence next week. This was revealed by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday. Onanuga explained that the project, initially abandoned in 1976 during Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure as Head of State, is being revived by the Tinubu government.

“The 1000km Sokoto-Badagry highway project will be flagged off next week. It will open up that part of the country,” Onanuga stated. He emphasized that while the project was first conceived in 1976 during the Obasanjo regime, it was abandoned shortly afterward. The current administration is determined to bring it to completion.

In July, the Minister of Works, Engineer Nweze David Umahi, confirmed that the project would be launched in Kebbi State by President Tinubu in August. He highlighted that work would begin on the 258km section located in the Kebbi axis, marking the start of the project. Umahi also pointed out that the route of the highway follows the path of the ancient trans-Sahara trade route, which was planned over 48 years ago but is only now being implemented under Tinubu’s leadership.
