Tinubu Renames UNIMAID in Honour of Late Muhammadu Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri will now bear the name Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, in tribute to the late former president.

The announcement came during a solemn session of the expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Thursday.

Tinubu paid glowing tribute to Buhari, describing him as a man defined by discipline, integrity, and unwavering patriotism.

While acknowledging that Buhari, like every leader, had his imperfections, Tinubu said the former president remained a fundamentally decent and honourable man. He noted that though Buhari’s legacy would continue to spark debate, his commitment to public service, incorruptibility, and principled leadership would stand the test of time.

“Before we take the prayers in honour of his memory, with this special session of the Federal Executive Council (expanded), can we adopt the naming of the University of Maiduguri with a new name — Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri,” Tinubu said, prompting applause from those present, including ministers who served in Buhari’s administration and his son, Yusuf Buhari.
