Kindly share this story

A disturbing incident has sparked outrage and concern after a young woman was rescued along the Utsu–Okigwe Road in Imo State, following an alleged sexual assault by a man reportedly pretending to be mentally unstable.

According to eyewitnesses, residents were alerted by unusual movements near a bushy area along the road. Upon investigation, they found the young woman unclothed, visibly shaken, and disoriented. The suspected assailant was not found at the scene, but witnesses said the woman had allegedly been dragged into the nearby bush where the assault occurred.

Those who came to her aid said the victim appeared deeply confused and traumatized. When questioned about her identity, she struggled to give consistent answers. She initially identified herself as “Uju,” later changed her name, and at another point claimed she was from a place called Amiza in Olusa. She repeatedly told those around her that her entire family was dead, insisting they had all been killed in her village.

Eyewitnesses further disclosed that the woman was unable to clearly explain how she got to the location. In a troubling moment, she reportedly attempted to walk back toward the direction of the bush, allegedly in search of the man, before residents intervened and stopped her.

A video of the rescue, now circulating on social media, has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls for increased security along the Utsu–Okigwe axis, which locals say has become increasingly unsafe.

As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether the woman has been identified or taken to a medical facility for treatment and psychological support. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, while residents have urged security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and apprehend the suspect.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the safety of women and vulnerable persons, as well as the growing use of deception by criminals to carry out heinous acts.
