Former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, recently expressed his dismay over the state of Nigerian politics. In an interview with BBC Hausa, he highlighted several concerns.
He stated that modern politicians prioritize vying for power and personal gain over addressing the needs and interests of the general public.High-profile politicians switch parties (e.g., from opposition to APC) solely for self-interest.Opposition politics in Nigeria has lost its true purpose, with members focused on personal gain rather than serving the public.

Bafarawa’s experience with politics over 48 years is vastly different from what he sees today. He remembers a politics that focused on advocating for the well-being of the general public, providing good education, access to water, healthcare, and more.
He expressed concern about the troubling level of illiteracy among young people, particularly in Northern Nigeria. He cautioned that this issue puts the region’s future in jeopardy, with about 70% of youth lacking educational opportunities.
Bafarawa defended underprivileged voters who take money during elections, arguing that their difficult economic circumstances offer them few alternatives.
“If you hold the impoverished population responsible for taking money to vote on election day, remember it’s not wholly their fault. They are struggling with poverty, lacking employment and means of support. What other choice do they have?”
Bafarawa believes that only divine intervention can rescue Nigeria from its current challenges.
