Ebonyi State Bans House and Land Agents

Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has announced a sweeping reform in Ebonyi State’s housing sector, declaring that beginning in 2026, house and land agents will no longer be permitted to operate in the state.

The decision, which has already sparked mixed reactions across the state, is aimed at tackling the persistent rise in house rents and land-related exploitation. The governor noted that many residents have fallen victim to agents who charge outrageous commissions and fees — in some cases as high as ₦500,000 — on properties that do not even belong to them.

Governor Nwifuru stressed that the new policy will restore fairness in the housing sector, reduce the financial burden on tenants, and prevent further exploitation of citizens. He explained that starting next year, no agent will be allowed to collect any money from people seeking accommodation or land for rent, lease, or purchase.

The state government is expected to put in place a new framework that will streamline property transactions, possibly through direct landlord-to-tenant agreements or government-regulated housing schemes.

While some residents have praised the move as a relief from the high cost of securing accommodation, others fear it may create confusion in the housing market if not properly managed.

This landmark decision positions Ebonyi as the first state in Nigeria to outrightly ban house and land agents, signaling a bold step towards reshaping real estate dealings and protecting citizens from financial exploitation.
