JUST IN: Tinubu Extends Tenure of Customs Comptroller-General by One Year

President Bola Tinubu has approved a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Initially slated to end his tenure on August 31, 2025, Adeniyi will now remain in office until August 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the extension is intended to give Adeniyi time to consolidate ongoing reforms and see through critical initiatives of the Tinubu administration. These include the modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and fulfilling Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” the statement read. “The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in fulfilling its core mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.”
Adeniyi was first appointed as acting Comptroller-General in June 2023, following the exit of his predecessor, Hameed Ali. His appointment was confirmed in October 2023.
