Senate Begins Screening of Tinubu’s Newly Appointed Service Chiefs
The Senate on Wednesday commenced the screening of the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu.
The exercise, which began around 10 a.m. at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, saw the arrival of the new chiefs in the company of senior military officers.
The Senate had earlier rescheduled the screening from next week to October 29, following a directive from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who read the President’s letter seeking expeditious consideration of the nominees.
In his correspondence, President Tinubu emphasized the need for continuity and effective coordination of the nation’s security operations.
The appointments, announced on October 24, saw General Olufemi Oluyede replacing General Christopher Musa as Chief of Defence Staff. Others include Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff.

Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retains his position, according to the statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.
The new Chief of Defence Staff, General Oluyede, previously served as Chief of Army Staff, succeeding the late General Taoreed Lagbaja.
The outgoing chiefs—General Christopher Musa, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, and Air Marshal Bala Abubakar—had been in office since June 2023 and oversaw major military operations against insurgents and bandits in the North-East and North-West regions.
While their leadership recorded notable gains, persistent insecurity across the country led to renewed calls for a strategic overhaul of the armed forces.
