Calabar Police Inspector Remanded for Killing Officer’s Wife, Injuring Two
A Chief Magistrate Court in Calabar has ordered the remand of Inspector Effiong Bassey in a correctional facility for fatally shooting a retired police officer’s wife and injuring two others.
The ruling was made by Chief Magistrate Mercy Ene during Bassey’s arraignment on Monday. The remand followed an ex parte motion filed by SP Otu Ubangah, the legal officer for the state police command, who stated that the motion was necessary while awaiting advice from the state Attorney General.
Ubangah informed the court that his application was backed by a six-paragraph affidavit and a written address. The magistrate granted the request and adjourned the case to April 14 for a report from the State Department for Public Prosecution (DPP).

The incident occurred on Sunday morning when the officer allegedly opened fire on passersby without provocation, leading to the fatal shooting of one victim and injuries to two others.
Meanwhile, the state police command has urged the victims’ families and the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
In a statement, police spokesperson SP Irene Ugbo assured:
“Justice, fairness, and equity will prevail, and the outcome of the investigation will be made public in due course.”
