Bago Vows to Protect IBBU Lapai, Promises Lasting Security Solutions

The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has assured that his administration will protect Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai and its students following recent security breaches that led to the university’s indefinite closure.
The governor emphasized that IBBU Lapai, being a state-owned institution, will be fully safeguarded by the government.
He directed the university’s management to work with the State Security Committee to implement new security protocols, including:recruitment, training, and equipping of personnel for internal security.
However, Issuance of identity cards with secure codes for students and staff to control access within the campus.
Parents will be required to sign undertakings on their children’s behavior, and the government will take decisive actions against any student threatening the peace and order of the university community.
The university will adopt a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) model to address the housing deficit facing students.
The institution is encouraged to become more innovative in generating internal revenue.
All satellite campuses of IBBU will be phased out within the next three years, with all academic programs relocated to the main campus in Lapai.
The governor called for improved community relations between the host town and the university.
A town hall meeting will be convened with Lapai stakeholders, and a vigilante group will be established to complement formal security efforts.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Mamagi, and Lapai Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Musa Kirikpo, highlighted the institution’s challenges, including insufficient hostel spaces and manpower for security.
The Vice Chancellor of IBBU Lapai, Prof. Mohammed Hadi Suleiman, spoke on the university’s efforts to secure interventions for additional hostels and essential infrastructure.
