Abuja man arrested for assaulting wife, daughters

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old contractor, David Tersoo, for allegedly assaulting his wife and two young daughters during a late-night domestic violence incident in Mpape, Abuja.

Police said the case came to light on Tuesday night after a distress call reported that an eight-year-old girl, her three-year-old sister, and their mother had been violently attacked.

The woman was forced out of the house in the middle of the night with her nine-month-old baby, while one of the children was found with visible bruises.

FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, said in a Wednesday statement that operatives of the Mpape Division, alongside the command’s Gender Unit and officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs, rescued the children and placed them in protective custody with their mother.

She added that Tersoo initially locked himself inside the house behind a bulletproof door while armed with a pump-action gun.

After a standoff, officers subdued and arrested him without casualties.

A firearm, white powder, and other suspected illicit substances were also recovered.

The suspect has been taken in for drug testing, while investigations continue. The Commissioner of Police commended the swift intervention of neighbors and the Ministry of Women Affairs, urging victims of domestic abuse to speak out.

Tersoo’s arrest highlights the persistent challenge of domestic violence in Nigeria, where studies show more than one in three women has suffered physical or emotional abuse.

Despite the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015, enforcement remains weak, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

This case follows a string of recent domestic violence incidents, including the June arrest of a man in Minna, Niger State, accused of beating his pregnant wife to death.
