Nigerian Army Calls for Developmental Journalism to Combat Insecurity

Brigadier-General Babatunde Omopariola, Commander of the 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army in Katsina State, has urged for the adoption of developmental journalism to effectively tackle insecurity.

During a luncheon with members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Katsina State Council, Omopariola emphasized the media’s pivotal role in shaping public opinion and supporting military operations. The event, held at the Command’s Officer Mess in Katsina, was part of activities marking the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, aimed at enhancing collaboration between journalists and the military.

“The media plays an increasing role in shaping public opinion, influencing military operations, and galvanizing public support in the information age,” Omopariola stated.

He advocated for embedding journalists in military operations to counter negative reporting and foster closer cooperation between the media and security agencies. Omopariola also stressed the importance of patriotic journalism that avoids jeopardizing national security.

In response, NUJ Chairman Tukur Den-Ali expressed appreciation for the partnership and pledged continued support from journalists in Katsina. He affirmed the media’s commitment to promoting interagency cooperation and national security alongside the Brigade and other security outfits.

The luncheon highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts between the military and the media in addressing security challenges and uniting against insecurity.
