Breaking: We’re Hungry; Enough is Enough – Nigerians Kick Off #FearlessInOctober Protests in Abuja
Thousands of Nigerians in Abuja took to the streets on Tuesday morning, joining the #FearlessInOctober protest to express their anger over the severe hardships and poverty they say have worsened under the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The protesters, chanting “We are hungry,” marched through the capital city, voicing their frustrations with the state of the nation.
Protesters carried banners with messages like “Bad governance has ended the dreams of Nigerian youths, end it now” and “Enough is Enough – Revolution Now.” One protester passionately declared, “We are buying fuel for N1000, and you expect us not to protest? What are we saying – we are hungry!”
Human rights activist and leader of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Comrade Omoyele Sowore, had earlier called on Nigerians to join him in the October 1st protest. He urged citizens to rise against the hardships, hunger, unemployment, insecurity, and poverty that he claims the current administration has imposed on the people.
Sowore, in a statement released on Monday evening, emphasized that he could not remain silent in the face of the suffering endured by Nigerians. He vowed to be on the streets alongside other citizens, demanding better governance. According to Sowore, protests are a vital tool for people to voice their opposition to government policies that harm the public, and he reaffirmed that this right is inherent in every individual.
The activist also reminded the public of his own struggles, stating that he has spent five of the last six years in prison, detention, or under confinement due to what he described as politically motivated treason charges by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite these challenges, Sowore vowed to continue the fight until their demands are met.
