Nigerian police officers have disgreed on a new welfare initiative brought by the Nigeria Police Cooperative Multi-Purpose Society Ltd., describing it as a scheme designed to exploit junior officers.

The controversial programme involves the distribution of tricycles (Keke Napep) at an inflated price of N5.5 million, despite the market value being around N3.5 million. Officers have accused senior officials of using the initiative as a means to extort money from their subordinates under the guise of a welfare scheme.

A source within the force expressed frustration, questioning how a cooperative meant to serve its members could impose such unfair pricing. “How can they justify selling a tricycle worth N3.5 million for N5.5 million? This is another attempt to milk junior officers dry,” the officer lamented.

Reports show that the scheme was brought as part of a welfare programme initiated by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. According to an internal police directive, the tricycles are being supplied by Bulk Stalker Engineering Limited and will be sold on loan to officers. The repayment structure involves monthly salary deductions of N90,000 for 60 months through the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Officers have complained bitterly with because of the way finance were mismanaged within the Police Cooperative, suspecting that past and present Inspector Generals of Police have withdrawn large sums of money from the cooperative without repayment.

However, affected officers are really seeking for transparency and accountability in the management of police welfare initiatives.
