
The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has called for local governments to become proactive drivers of economic growth, utilizing their resources and creating sustainable development models independently of state and federal transfers.
Senator Bagudu made the call while delivery his Speech during the Local Government Economic submmit in Abuja on Tuesday,3rd December 2024.
He reiterated the federal government’s commitment to supporting local governments through partnerships and resource mobilization, particularly in agriculture and rural transformation, crucial for national prosperity and food security.
He highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy amidst global and regional political challenges, emphasizing the country’s achievement in maintaining stability.
The Minister also stressed the importance of local governments in economic planning and rural development, citing the Constitution’s mandate for collaboration between local, state, and federal authorities.
While drawing from his experience as a former governor of Kebbi State, Senator Bagudu shared how strategic planning and investment in agriculture, specifically rice farming, led to a remarkable increase in productivity.
He emphasized the potential for replicating such successful transformations across Nigeria’s local governments.
The former governor went ahead to note the importance of collaborative efforts in transforming local governance and advancing Nigeria’s economy, highlighting the need for dialogue to align strategies and mobilize resources effectively.
