IG Meets Retired Officers After Protest, Promises Swift Action
In a swift response to the peaceful protest staged on Monday by retired police officers, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, held an emergency meeting with representatives of the retirees to address their long-standing grievances.
The meeting, which took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, focused on the challenges faced by retired officers, particularly issues related to unpaid pensions, poor welfare, and neglect by the authorities. The IG acknowledged their sacrifices and assured them that their concerns were valid and would be treated with utmost urgency.
“We understand your pain. You have served this nation with honor and deserve better. I am personally committed to ensuring your welfare is prioritized,” Egbetokun stated.
He also revealed that the Police High Command is in talks with relevant government agencies to expedite the resolution of pension-related bottlenecks and improve post-service benefits.
Monday’s protest, which was held peacefully across several states, saw retired officers demanding justice, dignity, and immediate government intervention.
The IG emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of retired personnel while urging them to remain calm as efforts to address their issues are already underway.
This move is seen as a positive step toward restoring trust between the police institution and its retired members.
