Prof. Ahmad Isah Haruna Blasts ASUU Over Role in Election Manipulation
A renowned academic, Prof. Ahmad Isah Haruna, has criticized the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accusing some members of aiding politicians in rigging elections while still expecting the government to respect their demands.
In a statement that has sparked heated debate, Prof. Haruna said:
“You cannot help politicians to rig elections and expect them to respect you and your demands.”
He noted that lecturers who serve as returning and collation officers during elections often compromise the process, thereby empowering corrupt leaders who later neglect the education sector.
According to him, such actions undermine ASUU’s credibility when the union embarks on industrial actions demanding improved welfare and better funding for universities.
Observers say Prof. Haruna’s remarks raise tough questions about integrity, accountability, and the role of intellectuals in strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
ASUU is yet to officially respond to the allegation.
