Kindly share this story

A deeply troubling case of alleged child abuse has sparked anger in Calabar, where a young girl named Edidiong, believed to be under seven years old, was reportedly subjected to repeated physical abuse.

According to reports, the child was allegedly beaten by Mrs. Unyime Bassey, who resides at No. 8 Stream Road in the Atimbo area. Edidiong is said to work in the household as a nanny, taking care of Mrs. Bassey’s youngest daughter, Blessing, who is the same age as her.

Neighbours in the area claim the little girl is often punished harshly for minor mistakes and frequently suffers severe beatings. The most recent incident reportedly occurred after Edidiong was accused of taking a piece of meat from the family’s pot of soup. Witnesses described the latest beating as “mild” compared to previous punishments she has endured.

Residents also revealed that while Mrs. Bassey’s biological children attend school, Edidiong does not receive any form of education and instead works in the home.

The situation has triggered widespread outrage in the community, particularly because Mrs. Bassey and her husband are known to be pastors.

The case has since been reported to the Nigeria Police Force at the Nigeria Police Force Airport Division. Community members and human rights advocates are now urging groups such as the Basic Rights Council to intervene and ensure justice and protection for the young girl.
