National Youth Games: Ekiti shines with basketball gold, adds to medal haul

Team Ekiti extended its impressive form at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, on Thursday by clinching gold in the boys’ basketball event.
Ekiti edged out Lagos in a nail-biting final, winning 19-18. Both sides displayed grit and skill, but Ekiti’s resilience proved decisive in sealing the closely fought contest.
Speaking after the match, State Basketball Coach, Adetayo Awojinrin, praised the team’s determination:
“I am grateful to God for crowning our efforts with success. Despite the challenges we faced during the group stage, we defeated Lagos in the final. I’m proud of the players and confident this victory will spur them to more gold medals in the future.”
In other events, Funbi Adedoyin won bronze in the 48kg female Kungfu category, with Head Coach Ronke Raji commending her fighting spirit against tough opponents.
Para-athlete Suleiman Abdulazeez also lifted Ekiti’s medal count with a gold in discus and silver in shot put.
Meanwhile, standout performers Abdulazeez Suleiman (para-athletics), Precious Ayodele (Ayo Olopon), and Damilola Oni (cricket) have earned invitations to the National Federation following their outstanding displays.

With these results, Team Ekiti now has two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, strengthening its position among the top-performing states at Asaba 2025.
