African Women: Pillars of Strength and Progress, Says Prof. Lemchi on IWD

The pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Prof. Stella Ngozi Lemchi, has called for the recognition and celebration of African women, emphasizing their critical role in family, society and governance.

Speaking in her goodwill message for International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, Lemchi praised the resilience, discipline, and dedication of women who have shattered barriers in various fields. She also commended President Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for fostering gender inclusivity in governance, aligning with the values of African society.

An achievement, she noted, that would not have been possible without the contributions of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, “who is herself an accomplished woman and a champion of women’s emancipation in politics, economy and society.”

Lemchi acknowledged the cultural and societal hurdles that many African women face, where their progress is sometimes misinterpreted as defiance. She urged society to actively support women from all walks of life while calling on women to continue complementing their husbands and working towards the overall well-being of society.

She also made a strong appeal to men, urging them not to feel threatened by the successes of women, stating that “society wins when both genders are cooperating.”

As the world marks International Women’s Day on March 8, a day dedicated to celebrating women’s contributions and our shared destiny, Lemchi emphasized that the African woman deserves continuous encouragement and support.
