Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State was thrown into chaos early Sunday morning after armed assailants targeted two Christian churches during Easter celebrations, killing at least seven people and abducting several others.
Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, which includes Ariko District, confirmed the attack to PUNCH Online via phone. The affected worship centres are the First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, both situated in Ariko.
“I am heading to the community to verify the number of casualties. While some reports mention seven fatalities, others say eight. I will provide updates as soon as we confirm the figures,” Bawa said. He noted that poor telecommunications coverage in the area might have enabled the attackers to strike without immediate intervention.
According to Bawa, “The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the community and opened fire sporadically on worshippers. Several were killed, and many were abducted into the surrounding bush.”
Residents also reported that the assailants operated for a prolonged period without facing resistance, underscoring the vulnerability of rural communities in Kaduna State.
This latest attack follows a similar incident in February 2026 in Kurmin Wali, also in Kachia LGA, where dozens of churchgoers were abducted during a service. The recurrence of such attacks has intensified calls for stronger security measures in Southern Kaduna.
When contacted, Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer DSP Mansir Hassan said more information on the tragedy would be shared soon.
Security analysts have pointed out that repeated assaults on rural communities, especially during religious events and festive periods, highlight the ongoing security challenges in Southern Kaduna.
More updates are expected as authorities investigate the incident.
