Rivers APC Opposes Impeachment Moves Against Governor Fubara

Kindly share this story

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly opposed the reported impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the move as unnecessary and politically motivated.

In a press statement issued  signed by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju. on Wednesday, the party acknowledged the independence of the legislature and its constitutional role in ensuring checks and balances. However, the APC made it clear that it does not support any attempt to remove the governor through impeachment at this time.

According to the party, the current tension is a spillover from unresolved internal crises inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which it warned should not be allowed to destabilize the APC-led government in the state.

The party further explained that the impeachment threat is reportedly linked to budgetary issues. It reminded the public that during the period of emergency rule, a budget was submitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025. This budget, totaling ₦1.485 trillion, was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025.

The APC noted that the budget is valid for one year, running until August 2026. It added that the governor is not constitutionally compelled to present a supplementary budget if he is satisfied with the current fiscal framework. The party also pointed out that the constitution allows governors to spend for up to six months into a new fiscal year.

The party called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external influences aimed at destabilizing the state government. It emphasized its commitment to protecting the APC-led administration under Governor Fubara from internal conflicts.

In a strong warning, the party urged lawmakers to immediately halt any impeachment process, stating that such actions could damage the image of the party and hinder the state’s development.

The APC concluded by calling for the preservation of democratic principles in Rivers State, cautioning against turning governance into what it described as “politicocracy.”
