Abuja Court Sentences Ex-Driver to Death for Murder of Former Employer, Wife

A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Jonathan Marcus to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering his former employer, 80-year-old Adebola Ezekiel, and his wife, Abiodun Ezekiel.

The couple were brutally killed at their residence in the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, on April 1, 2024.

According to the FCT Police Command, detectives launched an intensive investigation following the discovery of the killings, which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect in Obajana, Kogi State, where he had reportedly fled after the incident.

Investigators said Marcus admitted during interrogation that he entered the victims’ home at about 11:00 p.m. on April 1, 2024, and carried out the attack. Police also established that he had previously worked as the couple’s driver but was dismissed after a series of disputes with them.

The suspect was prosecuted before the FCT High Court, where the prosecution presented evidence against him. Delivering judgment, Justice M. S. Idris ruled that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt, convicted Marcus on two counts of murder, and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Reacting to the verdict, the FCT Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory, stressing that individuals who commit crimes will continue to face the full weight of the law.
